My study abroad was not really glorious things about improving English, but I gained meaningful experience on my life. I was exposed a lot of cultural differences. First, low power distance. It is really different from Japan. At school or in volunteer place, many superior respect individual opinion. Also, this is likely because high Individualism national character. I felt more comfortable and equal.
Second, my volunteer experience at Senior care center showed me that communication is not limited to language. For example, I tried to make eye contact with residents during activity. Just did that, resident’s expression became smile. I realized nonverbal communication is effective way as well.
Last, I had enough time to do what I wanted to do. That made my daily life fulfilling one. I didn’t take personal time before study abroad. I was able to get back to myself.
